Envelopes are also no problem when it comes to print jobs and this Hewlett-Packard handles up to 20 of them. There's no automatic feeder, but that really shouldn't be an issue in a small or medium workgroup. Manual duplex printing is also available, and performing a print job on both sides is fairly easy to do. Additionally, the 4650dn also comes with 160 MB of memory, which can be increased upwards to 544 MB with no trouble.

This Hewlett-Packard printer also -- like most other HP printer products -- works well with just about every Windows-based operating system and a number of Mac OS systems, as well. The office information technology specialist can interface it easily into a network, and there is a standard one-year warranty, which can be lengthened for just a small fee.

This printer is also easy to connect, as it comes standard with parallel port and USB port capability. It also has an internal print server for a 10/100 Ethernet port. How to Attach a Memory Card to Your Computer Motherboard

Hospitals to Obama - Take a Number, Take a Seat

Medical and insurance industry pundits agree the transition to electronic medical records will result in substantial cost savings for patients. Huge medical groups and publicly-traded hospital corporations - the first health care groups to turn mountains of paperwork into racks of computer servers - talk about millions of dollars in annual paperless savings with their shareholders.

But some hospitals and doctors think the Obama administration is moving too fast in its efforts to promote the transition to electronic health records, according to the New England Journal of Medicine.

At issue is a proposed regulation that spells out what hospitals and health providers must do in order to receive incentive payments for "meaningful use" of electronic health records. Thanks to the economic stimulus legislation, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will pay up to $17 billion starting in 2011 to hospitals, doctors and other health providers that meet these standards.

To be clear about what amounts to an economic mandate, by 2015, Obama has authorized CMS to cut Medicare reimbursements to hospitals and providers that aren't "meaningful users" of electronic medical records. What isn't clear is what "meaningful users" may eventually mean. For now though, CMS just released a list of some 20 electronic medical records standards that providers must meet in order to qualify for the incentive payments.

After a few weeks of reflection, the American Hospital Association balked at the standards. The proposed rules are too stringent, the organization contents, and would penalize hospitals that already are using technology to reduce medication errors, track outcomes and collect basic patient health information without a mandate or incentive to do so.

"As proposed, the current regulations may actually make it more difficult for hospitals and doctors to adopt health information technology," said Rick Pollack, the association's executive vice president. "Unless significant changes are made and timelines re-examined, it is unlikely that the vast majority of hospitals can meet the proposed standards."

While experts believe the expanded use of electronic records will improve the quality and efficiency of health care, and improve patient safety, hospital administrators and physicians know all too well that the process will amount to more than simply scanning pages and moving on. In a government-funded survey published last year by the New England Journal of Medicine, only about 17 percent of all doctors in the United States are currently using an electronic medical records system.

Some believe that once the medical record transition gets going, peer pressure will drive compliance.

"Electronic medical records will accelerate and facilitate health information technology adoption by more individual providers and organizations throughout the health care system," said Dr. David Blumenthal, national coordinator for health information technology, in a recent interview with New York Times.

Since three-fourths of U.S. doctors work in small practices not aligned with deep pockets of hospital corporations or insurance companies, the conversion to electronic medical records amounts to a major cost that's long deferred. Technology isn't the problem. Money, time and training are the culprits.

"There's no way small practices can effectively implement electronic health records on their own," said Dr. Farzad Mostashari, assistant commissioner for the New York City health department. "This is not the iPhone."

DVD Alphabet Soup Demystified

What is a person to do standing there in the aisle at the computer store being confronted with an alphabet soup of DVD discs? You simply want to move your home movies on your computer to a DVD and are now bewildered by all the "flavors". Which DVD is best for your purposes and what do all those letters and symbols mean anyway?

Just like school, lets start with the basics. You probably already know what a DVD is used for but do you know what DVD stands for? Nothing! It was all very similar to the battle between Blu-Ray and HD DVD that played out with Blu-Ray the winner a little over a year ago. However, in the case of DVD-R and DVD+R, there was tie. Both became accepted and widely used. The type of disc you use is simply dependent on the type of DVD hardware you have.

However, it is now almost universal for hardware to be capable of handling both types of DVD's thereby minimizing the danger of purchasing the incorrect format. Optical drives for your computer that handle both formats will be denoted as DVD+/-R. Incidentally, both formats are very similar in quality although +R format has been represented to have slightly more and better storage than the -R format. Unless you are a techno wonder geek, consider the formats equivalent.

The next alphabet mystery is the "RW". This notation indicates that the disc can be recorded to multiple times. If you get tired of watching your spouses square-dancing lessons, you can record your nail-biting tiddlywinks championship game on top of it. Discs with just an "R" can only be recorded onto once. As a general rule of thumb, RW discs are useful for general computer files and data while R discs are good for music and video.

The real take home message is to make sure you purchase discs that are compatible with your hardware. The best way to make sure this happens is to equip your computer with a DVD burner that will handle all of the formats. This way you can avoid the indigestion that alphabet soup can cause.

MTP Fiber Cable is Replacing Copper Cable in Computer Room Applications?

There are several reasons why fiber cables are replacing copper cables for many computer room applications. The most important reason is the requirement for greatly increased bandwidth for high definition conferencing and HDTV systems. This requires higher speeds to satisfy information needs and fiber cable has much higher bandwidth available than copper cable.

Another important reason for this trend is that the connectors on the fiber cables(LC especially) are smaller in size than those on copper cables and require less back plane real estate on the servers, switches, and routers necessary for the data system. This is the reason that manufacturers are switching to LC connectors on some of their servers and switches.

Fiber cables are preferable in many cases where power lines run in close proximity to the data cables in order to avoid electromagnetic crosstalk to which fiber cables are immune. Where there are air conditioning and/or fan motors, which may be necessary for the computer system and are close to the data cabling, the use of fiber cables will avoid cross talk interference with the data signals.

Distance considerations are also of great importance in the setup of a computer room data system. With fiber cables, we are able to extend the distances that we can run high speed data as compared to copper cables. Where there are legacy copper cabling systems that have to remain in operation, there are media converters which interface the fiber system with MTP 12 fiber mass termination connector ports and also have multiple RJ 45 ports on the front which interface the copper cables. Smaller media converters are also available that interface one or two copper duplex ports on the input and convert the signal to one or two fiber duplex output ports for 10/100/1000 gigabit ethernet systems. By the utilization of these devices, the existing legacy system can be extended to interface more remote systems than previously was possible.

If you have hundreds of copper cables running from servers to switches you may actually impede air flow under the computer room floor. If you are dealing with smaller, thinner fiber cable, you do not set up much of a block to your air flow. To expand to new servers, a trunk cable with MTP connectivity can be dropped in and be up and running very quickly. All the cabling or cassettes do not have to be installed up front with necessary capital expenditure. MTP fiber cables include 24, 36, 48, 72, or 144 fibers. The network can be deployed as the servers and switches are increased.

Replacing Computer DVD Or CD-Rom Drives

There are 2 different types of CD-ROM drives:

SCSI, which will need a SCSI interface card and the more popular IDE drives.

The IDE drives connect similar to your IDE Hard Disk Drive with the exception being the audio cable.

Open your computer tower case.

Locate a free multicolored power supply cable.

Connect the wider flat ribbon cable to the secondary IDE Hard Drive connector on your motherboard, making sure the dotted colored edge goes to pin # 1.
You can also use an available connector on the cable already connected to your Hard Disk Drive.

Connect the other end of the ribbon cable to the DATA connector on the CD-ROM DRIVE.

If you have a sound card, connect the audio cable to CD Audio In, on the sound card.

Connect the other end of the cable to the Audio Output connector on the CD or DVD Drive.

Remove one of the faceplates on the computer case and slide the drive into an available bay.

Secure it with 4 Phillips screws using a non-magnetic screwdriver only!

Unless your DVD Drive comes in a kit with an interface card you can install it the same way as the CD-ROM Drive.
After you've checked all your connections, close up your computer tower case and install any supplied software.

Features of Good Server Rack and Computer Server Racks

It is common for management in a smaller company to OK new servers and somehow forget they need to go somewhere. We get frantic calls daily from customers saying they need a server rack or cabinet for their new hardware.

This is where things can get a bit dicey. Many of today's servers are blade servers and they can be from 29-42 inches deep. They also run hot and are very noisy. One Network Manager said he thought he was sitting on the wing of a propeller driven plane it was so loud!

Since blade servers pull air from the front and blow it out the back, a quality server rack cabinet will require special venting for air flow. If you need a secure cabinet, the front and rear doors should be mesh or perforated. This allows you to lock the doors and still be able to see your hardware. Depending on your room, you may also want to install a fan for extra air movement. Many servers use mounting brackets that have a flange that fits in a square hole on the rackrails of a cabinet or rack. It is imperative that the cabinet you choose have this type of rackrail.

There are other types of server racks referred to as 4-post server racks. In most cases, they are a frame that has 2-sets of vertical square holed rackrails that adjust in depth. Some of the better 4-post racks can adjust from 26-42 inches deep. This is a very functional low cost way to put your hardware on.

Some Key things to consider when choosing a server rack are:

Depth of hardware including depth of cables attached
Do you need an open rack or enclosed locking cabinet
Is noise a concern for the location
Will you need a fan
Do you need blank panels to help direct airflow
Will you have special cabling applications
What type powerstrip, PDU, do you need
What is the ambient temperature for location
Do you need any temperature or humidity sensors
Will you be using a keyboard, monitor or KVM

As you can see, there are a lot of considerations to choosing the best server rack for your applications. A quality rack or cabinet can accommodate the above considerations. That being said, one of the biggest mistakes is buying a server rack cabinet that is not deep enough.

Buying A Computer: Drives (Part 1): Affordability And Performance Buying Tips

This article series will be broken down into the following sections: Processor and Memory, Hard Drive and Multimedia Drives, Audio, Video, and Graphics, Data Fax and Modem, and Ports.

These articles are about the components of the Compaq Presario SR1617CL-B; however, the knowledge you gain from these articles will equip you to make better buying decisions regarding any home desktop computer purchase. I will also add information and tips about computer components that are not in the Compaq Presario so that you have a solid understanding and that you are equipped to do good comparisons when shopping.

Hard Drive and Multimedia Drives: First of all, the hard drive type used most in home computers is the ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment) drive (better known as the IDE drive). This drive type has a 16 bit parallel interface and it supports up to 133MB/s data transfer rate. The version of ATA drive that supports this speed is ATA-7 and is the last drive of this type to be made.

When someone refers to a hard drive as an ATA drive, it is commonly a Parallel ATA hard drive. ATA hard drives are also often called IDE, EIDE, Ultra-ATA, Ultra-DMA, ATAPI, and PATA hard drives (each of these acronyms does imply specific details, but are commonly interchanged). Since the Compaq Presario SR1617CL-B uses a 160GB 7200RPM Ultra DMA hard drive, I will go into the specifics of Ultra DMA.

Ultra DMA can be best understood by breaking down its parts. DMA stands for Direct Memory Access. DMA allows the hard drive to send data directly to memory without visiting the processor (CPU). Since the CPU is busy doing all sorts of things, DMA increases performance by not having to wait on the CPU to get to the task. The Ultra in Ultra DMA means that the ATA transfer rate of 16.6 Mbytes/sec has been increased to 33.3 Mbytes/sec. There is an Ultra DMA hard drive that can transfer 133 Mbytes/sec and it is based on the ATA-7 standard and it can be found written as Ultra DMA-133 in desktop computer descriptions.

Therefore, if someone tells you that the computer you are buying has an Ultra DMA hard drive, make sure you ask if it is a 33,66,100 or 133 hard drive. The higher the DMA number the faster it can transfer data to the rest of the computer system. One last note Ultra ATA is the ATA hard drive standard developed by Intel, Seagate and Quantum for desktop computer systems.

In my next article of this series, we will move from the Ultra DMA drive to the workings of the SATA hard drive. Currently, the SATA drive is a little above the value priced range but as the popularity increases and the prices decrease the SATA will most certainly become the new standard.

Vent Servers Versus Teamspeak

Teamspeak and Ventrilo are inherently rather similar applications. Both of them use VoIP technology in a client-server layout, allowing game players and others to talk online. That means that many users install their software on their home computer, called the client, which is organized through the server, or central hub. This server should be placed in a well connected local data center to keep latency at a minimum.

Vent Servers

Ventrilo was first released in August of 2002, replacing outdated methods for talking to other players like Roger Wilco. While it hasn't completely taken over the market, Vent servers make up a big portion of the servers in the multi-user VoIP industry recently. Ventrilo primarily uses TCP for communications and can be bandwidth intensive, depending on the active codecs used. Users of Ventrilo tend to like the light-weight, simple interface for client computers.

Teamspeak Servers

Initially released in 2003, a little later than Ventrilo, Teamspeak's current version is Teamspeak 2. This application uses mostly UDP. Because it relies heavily on SQL databases on the server side, it's very processor intensive and can run much more slowly than Vent servers usually do. This makes it a poor choice for people with older or slower computers, who may find it gets in the way of play. There's a lot to the client interface, but this makes it somewhat bulkier and harder to use than Ventrilo.

As online voice communication methods continue to evolve, this competitive environment will keep producing more options. That means that online gamers and nongamers will be able to use Vent servers and other applications to communicate better with one another. Fourthly If you have have an old computer that is great, but no longer cuts the mustard, you don't have to get rid of it you can use it as an auxiliary system that you access when you need the data stored on that system and let it run applications in the background without effecting your new system in anyway. The use of a KVM switch is brilliant for this as it allows you to flick between computers using the same Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor to access both systems at the click of a button.

Servers - Racks, Blades and Towers

Unlike tower servers, offices that use rack servers which traditionally come in 1U, 2U, 3U, 4U or 6U are installed in racks. The numbers that give names to the rack mounted servers precisely indicate the number of Us they occupy in the racks. The 1U server occupy a single 1U bay, the 2U occupy two and the 4U occupy four, while a rack of standard size has up to 42U:

The servers in 1U format are preferred by companies for use in hosting and data, because they are very compact (only 4.4 cm high), which lets you install a large number of servers per rack. The main limitations of this format is the limitations with regard to ventilation (due to the small inner space), impeding the use of processors with high energy consumption and the need to use coolers and special fans, which all run at an extra cost. Besides the basic components, spare space in general to install 2 or 4 hard drives of 3.5 "(according to the provision of other components) and a single expansion card, installed horizontally, with the help of a Riser.

Then there are the 2U servers. They use "normal" power sources and coolers and therefore end up being a little cheaper. The bigger internal space makes the format more suitable for 2U servers with two or more processors, or processors that use high consumption. The height is not enough to install expansion cards upright, as in tower servers, but you can use a Riser (as in the case of 1U), or use half-height cards (the lower plates, which have half the height of normal plates).

Finally, we have the biggest servers, which use 3U or 4U. There are 6U servers, but they are rare: this format is typically used by the disk arrays and chassis for blade servers (see the topic below). Using a 3U server or larger completely eliminates the problems with space, allowing the expansion cards to be fit in vertically and a large number of removable hard drives installed in bays, but causes the server to occupy more space in the rack, which increases the cost to the host of the datacenter, where you would pay an extra fee per pen used.

Another format that is becoming increasingly popular are the blade servers (blade comes from the word "blade", indicating the small format), an ingenious idea to further increase the density of servers and allow the sharing of common components in the datacenter, as power supplies and optical disks.

The idea is that instead of having 10 1U servers, with 10 sources (or 20, if sources were used redundant), 20 network cables (each server typically uses two cables, one for the network and another for management or redundancy), as well as power cables, cables used by KVM and so on, you can use a single Chassis, with an equivalent number of blade servers.

Each blade is a complete server with its independent processor, memory, network card and disks. Its small size, the blade servers typically use low-power processors and hard drives of 2.5". At the beginning, it was the common use of processors from Transmeta and VIA, but they ended up being almost completely replaced by Intel & AMD multiple cores processors which are much faster, but still relatively economics. In the case of hard drives, the disks of 2.5 "are favorites for providing lower access times (but lose with respect to transfer rate), in addition to electric consumption.

Of course there's a lot more detail going on in each step, but hopefully you get the general idea that setting up an eCommerce application is a tad more complicated than your regular blog-style website.

Where Do You Start?
Sounds silly right, but the first step you need to do is think about the types of things you'll be selling on-line.

Are these products?, i.e. physical items that require packaging and posting or services provided by yourself or another provider e.g. Professional Yak Grooming.

How may products or types of services are you going to offer? Local or International? Are some seasonal? Do you have a finite stock level for particular items? Do you plan to use special offers & discounts? Do you even like yaks?

This leads to customer and payment questions.

Who are your customers? Where are they? How are they going to pay; credit card, cheque, PayPal? Which bank account will I need to set up?

And then there are the support questions.

How do you handle returned goods? How do you refund payments? How do you handle complaints?

Having a think about the products and services you're going to offer is vital because the first thing a web designer is going to ask you when you're requesting a quote is "How many things are you selling and to whom?"

The reason is of course time and costs.

Selling 50 products to a UK only customer base using PayPal requires a very different setup and hence costs, to one selling 1000+ products internationally and taking credit card payments.

Lets look closer at some of the important eCommerce application areas.

The eCommerce Application
Essentially, an eCommerce application is a bespoke Content Management System (CMS). So as well as updating posts and blogs it specialises in updating products and services and supporting commerce functions.

Like any CMS, the application splits the eCommerce website into two major parts; the front-end or shop-front where the customer can browse and buy goods and the back-end where you login to an administration dashboard and manage the website options, including the product catalogue.

The Product Catalogue
This will likely be your most important concern and is central to any eCommerce website design.

The product catalogue is where all your goods-for-sale data lives. The product name, description, cost, stock level, pictures etc. are all stored in here.

We sometimes get people asking which files their products are stored in and they get in bit of a tizzy when they can't find them on the server.

Usually, product catalogues are stored in a database, but don't worry - you don't have to know how to use a database. The eCommerce application does that for you through the product catalogue interface in the Administration Dashboard.

Being able to manage this yourself is vital, otherwise you'll be going back and forward to the web developer and the costs will rack up.

Thankfully, the eCommerce applications that we use, Magento and Wordpress e-Commerce, once installed, allow you to manage your own product catalogue from within the web browser.

The Magento product catalogue has advanced options and allows for things like adding discount codes, customer reviews, product videos etc., whereas the Wordpress e-Commerce catalogue offers a simpler solution while still covering the essential requirements you'll need to sell stuff on-line.

So how do you go about entering and updating all this product information?

The Admin Dashboard
Accessing a special web page on your site and entering a username and password will take you to the options part of your eCommerce website. This is commonly known as the Admin Dashboard.

Here, you will be able to update almost every aspect of the website including accessing the product catalogue, shipping costs, currency exchange rates, payment gateways, sales reports etc.

Whichever eCommerce solution you choose from us, we'll setup some or all of your product catalogue and make sure that customers can purchase items and that you get paid through a payment gateway (more on that late

The Shop Design
Of course your shop will need a look and feel to fit in with your business brand.

Again, just like other CMS's a web designer will be needed to develop a theme or template which will transform the default shop-front into whatever design you have in mind for your customers.

Themes can be bought off-the-shelf for both Wordpress e-Commere and Magento and you can apply these yourself, however, you may prefer to have a design exactly the way you imagined it and different from any of your competitors.

Themes are applied from the Administration Dashboard. You may be able to change a few aspects of the theme, such as your logo, background colour, text colour, however, you're not going to be able to move parts of the theme around to different areas of the screen. A web designer will need to do this by updating the theme's code.

Domain Name and Website Hosting
You will of course need a domain name to trade with and a hosting plan to store the website files and databases.

It's usually best not to purchase a hosting plan until you've spoken to a web designer and they have given you an idea of the best solution to implement.

Many of the cheaper hosting plans that are offered to you when purchasing a domain name, do not support databases or database applications. They may charge an extra setup and yearly fee for setting this up.

So try to avoid buying a hosting plan until you talk to a web designer and have an idea of the type of eCommerce solution you'll need to implement your ideas.

Merchant Bank Accounts vs Business Bank Accounts
Certainly in the UK, you must have a business bank account to legally trade as a business.

Business bank accounts can be used just fine with an eCommerce application but you will need to setup a Payment Gateway service to handle the payment transactions and get the customers money into your bank account.

If you're opening up a business bank account and your account manager knows you're going to be running an eCommerce website you may be offered a merchant bank account which is a specialised version of the business account.

The merchant account gives you a Merchant ID number and access to a Payment Gateway service that the bank uses or owns.

It's likely you'll need to pay for the setup of a merchant account and it will incur fees, usually on a per-transaction basis.

If you have already setup a merchant account then you will need to make sure your eCommerce application can support the particular payment gateway your bank has given you access to, otherwise you won't get your money.

e.g. Lloyds TSB uses the Cardnet merchant payment gateway. Royal Bank of Scotland uses the WorldPay merchant payment gateway.

If you were a Royal Bank of Scotland business customer with a merchant account, you would need to make sure your eCommerce application supported the WorldPay gateway.

You don't need to use the particular merchant account that your business bank offers to trade on-line, but you do need a payment gateway of some sort to handle payments.

That leads us nicely onto payment gateways.

Payment Gateways
We've touched on this in the previous section. Essentially, a merchant bank account will give you a payment gateway to use, but you're limited to just the one that your business bank is affiliated with.

A payment gateway is a service offered by a company.

It handles the payment part of the eCommerce application when a customer proceeds to the checkout to purchase an item.

The payment gateway collects the customers details and payment information securely and contacts your business bank account to complete the money transaction.

This is great for security too as your customers banking details aren't kept on your eCommerce website, so that's one less thing to worry about securing.

There are many different payment gateway services with different features and options. As a supplied service they all charge a fee for their use. The fees can include a setup charge and a % commission of the total price of a transaction.

Some payment gateways allow you to pay a monthly or annual fee if your number of transactions are high. This can work out more cost effective for you if your single transactions are high volume but low individual cost.

You've probably heard of some of the more well known gateway service providers and not known what they. You've also likely used them without even realising they are there. Some of the popular payment gateways are:
PayPal, Google Checkout, SagePay, WorldPay and ChronoPay.

It's great that you have a choice and the services are very competitively priced so take some time to check out which is best for your business model. If you need some help, we'd be happy to meet up and walk you through the options.

Some payment gateways offer two types of general services; hosted and inclusive.

Hosted Payment Gateways
These options usually don't require a set-up or monthly fee, however, transaction costs can be higher than an inclusive service.

The PayPal Website Payments Standard service is a good example of this.

Essentially, it limits your customers to having a PayPal account (they must register with the PayPal site) and when it comes to check-out, the customers are transferred from your eCommerce website to the PayPal website for the information gathering and payment transaction, then upon completion redirected back to your eCommerce website.

The downside of this method is really from a branding point of view. You have very limited control of how the payment gateway service, PayPal in this case, looks and operates before it redirects back to your website.

Some customers can be put off by redirecting to another site as confidence in security can be questioned (although PayPal in this instance has a very good reputation).

You're also limiting the payment method to just those customers who are willing to use the payment gateway's choice of payment. In this case, the customer must have a registered PayPal account.

A similar process happens if you use the Google Checkout payment gateway.

So what's the other option?

Inclusive Payment Gateways
Inclusive payment gateways will allow your customers to go through the whole checkout process without (the appearance of) leaving your branded eCommerce website.

I added in "the appearance of" because in some cases your customers will actually leave your website and use the payment gateway service, however, the way it is implemented and embedded makes it looks as if it's all part of your website and business brand.

So what's the catch?

There's usually a setup fee, a minimum subscription period (say 12 months), a monthly fee and of course a whole heap of conditions that apply.

Some particular conditions to look out for are thresholds on the number of transactions per month, or total monthly funds transferred. Payment gateway services can charge extra or insist you upgrade your service if these thresholds are exceeded in a similar way that mobile phone companies will charge you extra if you use up all your inclusive talk or SMS time.

The best benefit of using an inclusive payment gateway is that the whole customer experience from browsing to payment is hosted on your own website. This gives the customer a greater sense of confidence that their data will be kept safe and makes your whole business look and feel more professional.

A good example of this type of service is the PayPal Web Payments Pro.

Securing The Data
If you're using a payment gateway then the good news is it's unlikely you'll be storing sensitive customer payment details on your eCommerce website.

Those types of data will be kept securely in your payment gateway account.

Of course you will be collecting a whole lot of other important and confidential customer information such as name, email, perhaps address, likes, dislikes, a username and password for your site.

All this information needs to be kept secure and your eCommerce application will help with that. The Administration Dashboard will have lots of sections that control who and what can see parts of the collected data.

But that's not the only security you'll have to think about. Do you know what happens when you fill out a form on a website and click on submit?

If you have a look at the top of the web browser in the address bar you'll see the website's URL address. Most sites will start with http://

(For those that want to know, URL stands for Uniform Resource Location and HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol)

Any web page starting with http:// is transferring data to and from a web server in Plain Text.

This means, that the web page contents, code, images, text, form data are all sent in a format that's readable to humans. OK, it may not be that readable, but in essence all the information is there in English characters (or whatever language character set your website uses).

Now for some more techie stuff.

When your web page is sent to or received from a web server, there isn't a 1-to-1 direct connection between your website and the server. The web page data is transferred through hundreds of networks across different countries and through thousands of routing computers and other network devices before arriving at your computer.

This means that at any point during it's travel, your web page data has the potential to be intercepted and read by whomever.

There isn't much you can do about the interception part but there is something you can do to make it a darn lot harder for somebody to read and use your eCommerce web page data.

SSL Certificates
Now we're talking.

Let's skip the techie bit and quickly tell you what these are and what they do.

You buy an SSL certificate from a web hosting company (annual renewal most likely), install it into your eCommerce website and it encrypts your web page data. Hooorah!

You'll now notice that parts of your website, likely those that require personal form data to be collected and sent, now start with https://

The addition of that little "s" letter, standing for "Secure", means that the web page data is encrypted when sent and decoded only at the two end-points; your computer and a web server.

Anyone reading the page in between will see garbled non-readable characters.

You may also see additional signs of a secured web page such as a closed padlock icon.

We would strongly advise you buy an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate and get this installed and configured for use with your hosting account and eCommerce website.

In Summary
Creating an eCommerce website requires a fair amount of planning.

You'll need a good web design and web development team to implement your business venture.

It will cost you more and take longer to create than a regular blog or brochure-ware website because of all the design and setup.

You'll make money - and that's what's it's all about after all...

Hardware Firewalls Lacking

A firewall is a part of a computer system or network that is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting authorized communications. Since their creation, a battle has raged between those who believe a hardware or software firewall is better. In truth, even the hardware devices utilize some type of software and every product has it's own strengths and weaknesses.

No matter what your opinion, the fact remains that Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) is the best protection for a Microsoft environment. The reason is because ISA authenticates access at the edge of the network rather than allow traffic to penetrate the firewall and access a server directly. For Outlook Web Access, Terminal Services Gateway, or SharePoint, ISA authenticates logons before any servers are accessed. For hardware devices, the appropriate port and URL is opened and direct access is provided to the server through the firewall. Conceptually, once you have access to the server it's much easier to do harm.

Typical arguments tend to follow:

ISA is not a real firewall.
It has more than a 10 year history of use in all sectors including high security Government and Financial customers with highest certifications in the industry.

Windows has too many vulnerabilities.
Every system has discovered flaws and Windows/ISA has no more than any other offering. Further, ISA has Microsoft Update for security patches and enhancements while hardware updates are manual.

Hardware firewalls are faster.
Server processor, RAM, and NICs all offer higher performance and more expandability.

Hardware firewalls are cheaper.
Like everything in technology, it depends upon the offering and configuration on what is more expensive. Microsoft software generally has a 5 year standard and 10 year extended lifecycle with servers warranted for 4 years. Most hardware firewalls have a warranty of 3 years with annual maintenance, so total cost of ownership over life of the equipment tends to be higher.

If you prescribe to the notion of having two firewalls from different manufacturers, you can put a hardware firewall in front of ISA and still enjoy the edge authentication and perks like Active Directory integration to filter by user/group instead of just IP address. If you must have a box to put in the rack, then purchase an appliance that has ISA. In 2010, ISA runs on Windows Server 2008 with more features and a new name of Forefront Threat Gateway.

Data Recovery

A computer hard disk crashing is the stuff nightmares are made of for all those who depend entirely on computers for their day-to-day work. There are two basic types of damage to the hard disk, physical damage and logical damage.
