Twisted Pair Cable Categories and Uses

ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standard # 568 describes the various types of categories (or cat when it comes to a piece of cable). The three most popular and most used cables are Cat 5, Cat 5e and Cat 6. It 'important to choose the right category cables for the project you are doing. The reason is important, because you know that you are able to provide a certain level of performance available from network to be installed having the right categorycable.

Cat 5
Category 5 cable can be used for Ethernet traffic up to 100 Mbit / s ATM and implementation of 155Mbit / s. The standard cable from one Ethernet 100Base-TX Category 5. Cat 5 twisted pair cable is designed for high signal integrity. Some are not protected, while others are protected. Cat 5 is used in structured cabling for computer networks, Token Ring, basic voice services, and ATM. The Category 5 cable has four twisted pairs in a single cable jacket. Cat 5 is typically threetwists per inch of each twisted pair of wires inside the cable to 24 meters.

Cat 5e

Category 5e is an enhanced version of Cat 5 standard and can transfer data at 1000MBit / s. Cat 5e cable is the standard for use in Ethernet 1000Base-T. Cat 5e can carry data distances over Cat 5. Cat 5e can be safely used for the 350 meters. Cat 5e has improved the performance measures. It also has more complex interior. Cat 5e consists of both forms solid conductorand a non-recoverable. Stranded is more flexible and used for military applications. Cat 5e is solved in two different systems, but there is no difference in the system used.

Cat 6 is similar to Cat 5e, but is designed with an even stricter standards. Cat 6 is compatible with Cat 5e 5/Cat. Cat 6 has a standard 250 MHz and works with both 1000BASE-T and 10BASE-T / 100BASE-TX. It also works with standard 10GBASE-T, but there are limits as Cat 6 unshielded cableis used. As in previous Cat 5e / Cat 5, Cat 6 contains four twisted copper wire pairs. The cable is usually made with 22 AWG 24 AWG tot. Cat 6, when used in a patch cord function is often closed with an RJ-45.

You can use Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6 or in the project, but the signal will be limited to the lowest category of copper cable. When deciding which category of cable to use, make sure the cable that not only current needs but future needs as your choicewell.
